A widget filter applies to every cell of the widget. Filter this column and Filter this row apply a filter to a given column or row instead, or to every column or row representing a given measure. The rest of this page refers to columns, but rows work the same way. For instance, take a pivot table with products on rows, and the PnL and Delta measures on columns. Filtering the Delta column on the EUR currency gives:

How to filter a column or a row

  1. Right-click a column header and select Filter this column. On a row header, select Filter this row.
  2. In Filtered by, click or drag a hierarchy from the data model.
  3. Select members of that hierarchy. Repeat steps 2 and 3 to filter on more hierarchies.
  4. Optionally, rename the filtered column. Its default name is the caption of the header, followed by the selected members.
  5. Click Apply.

The filtered column takes the place of the original one. To keep the original column as well, uncheck Replace the original column before clicking Apply. The filtered column then comes right after the original one.

On a row, the checkbox reads Replace the original row. And an unchecked filtered row comes right below the original one. Selecting several members of a hierarchy aggregates their values, as a total over these members would. The filter cannot exclude members, nor select a date range.

Which headers can be filtered?

  • A header in the last row of column headers, unless its column is a total. The filter applies to that column only.
  • A measure in the first row of column headers. The filter applies to every column of that measure.
Filter this column is disabled on other headers.

How to edit or remove a filter

  1. Right-click the header of the filtered column, and select Filter this column. The popover shows the filter as it stands.
  2. Change the name or the filters, or check or uncheck Replace the original column. Then click Apply. Alternatively, click Remove filter. The filtered column disappears, and the original column comes back if the filter replaced it.
The Add a calculation > New column popover also lists filtered columns, with an fx icon. In this popover, a filtered column can only be deleted. See how to add a single row or column.

Limitations

  • A filtered column replacing its original column freezes its axis: fields cannot be added or reordered on it. This does not apply to a filtered measure. To add a field, remove the filter, or uncheck Replace the original column.
  • When the table is too large to load at once, Filter this column and Filter this row are disabled. So an already created filtered column can then not be edited.
