# How to book individual trades

> Manual contract preparation and booking through the Continue Booking screen, including quantity and price checks, book access, confirmation of position effects, and an optional offsetting-trade procedure

Applies to **Positions** → **Trade Booking** with the **Continue Booking** control.

Trade Booking prepares individual contracts before applying their position effects to a book.
Contract edits remain in the unbooked basket until booking succeeds.

## What is required before booking?

* Access to **Trade Booking**.
* Owner or edit access to the intended book.
* The intended contract terms, quantity, and required price information.

Available screens depend on the account configuration.
The screen with **Upload to Book** uses a separate workflow.
Use [Upload positions](./upload-positions) for supported file imports.

## How to prepare an individual trade

1. Select **Positions** in the sidebar.
2. Select **Trade Booking**.
3. Select **Add** above the table.
4. Select the required **Tradable Type**.
5. Select **Add** in the dialog.

Verify that the new row appears.
The initial contract contains defaults that require review.

6. Select the row's **Edit** control.
7. Enter the intended instrument-specific terms.
8. Enter the intended **Quantity**.
9. Select **Refresh (F9)**, where available, to update the displayed calculation.
10. Resolve any validation messages.
11. Select **Save**.

Verify the contract name and quantity in the returned booking table.
Saving these edits does not book the position.
Instrument-specific fields and quantity units vary by contract type.

## How to confirm the booking

1. Review every row in the unbooked basket.
2. Select **Delete** for any unintended unbooked row.
3. Verify that each removed row disappears before continuing.
4. Select **Continue Booking**.
5. Review every row on the **Confirmation** page.
6. Select the intended book from **Select a book...**.
7. Enter **Price Paid** wherever required.
8. Check the names, quantities, prices, and destination book.

<Warning>
  Booking creates new position effects in the selected book.
  All rows on the confirmation page are submitted together.
  The supplied quantities change existing holdings; they are not target position balances.
</Warning>

9. Select **Book** once.

Verify that **The booking was successful.** appears.

10. Select **OK**.

Verify the returned trade identifier, book, and instruments on **Trade Details**.
**Trade Details** rounds displayed quantities to whole numbers.
This display cannot verify fractional quantities precisely.
This booking flow records the trade date at booking time.
It has no historical trade-date selector.

A visible book choice does not guarantee booking permission.
If submission fails, review the message and existing trade state before retrying.
An uncertain response does not establish that nothing was saved.

## How to offset a booked trade

This procedure starts from the intended **Trade Details** page with **Reverse** available.

<Warning>
  Reversal creates another trade with opposite position effects at the new booking time.
  The original trade remains recorded.
  Repeating the action can create another offsetting trade.
</Warning>

1. Check the original trade identifier, book, and position effects.
2. Select **Reverse**.
3. Check the original trade identifier in **Reverse Trade**.
4. Select **Reverse** in the confirmation dialog.

Verify the success message and its link to the offsetting trade.

5. Open the linked trade.

Check the offsetting trade's identifier, book, and instruments.
The same quantity-rounding limitation applies to the offsetting trade.
Reversal does not rewrite the original trade's historical date.

## How can the updated positions be used in a report?

[Launch a report](../login-and-start/launch-a-report) for a portfolio containing the affected book.
Choose a portfolio date that includes the intended position effects.
Opening an earlier completed report displays its existing calculation.
