# How to create a market data environment

> Custom market-data environments for report setup, covering ownership, source priority, observation delivery through supported integrations, and the distinction between data updates and environment details

Applies to **Market Data** → **Environments** → **Market Data** in Risk Portal.

A market-data environment identifies a source of observations used by data views and report calculations.
Creating an environment establishes its name and ownership; it does not load market observations.

## What is required before creating an environment?

* Access to the **Market Data Environments** manager.
* A name that differs from environments already accessible to the account.
* A description of the intended data source or purpose.
* An agreed process for supplying the required market observations.

Available management controls depend on account access.
Default environments cannot be edited through this manager.

## How to create a custom environment

1. Open **Market Data** in the sidebar.
2. Expand **Environments**.
3. Select **Market Data**.
4. Select **Create Environment**.
5. Enter **Name** in **Create New Market Data Environment**.
6. Enter **Description**.
7. Select **Create**.

Verify that the table shows the intended name and description with **Owner** access.
A successful creation produces an active environment.
Check any error alert if the intended row does not appear.
Dialog closure alone does not prove that creation succeeded.

## How to choose environments for a report

1. Open the report setup dialog using [Launch a report](../login-and-start/launch-a-report).
2. Select the required active custom environment in **Market Data Environments**.
3. Use **Drag & Drop** to order multiple selected custom environments, if required.
4. Check the numbered selection order.
5. Review the environments displayed under **Defaults**.

Verify the intended sources before completing the report setup and run procedure.
The selection does not replace the report's date settings.
A report must run with the intended configuration to calculate using those choices.

## What is the source priority?

**Waterfall Logic** applies the configured source order.

| Priority | Source |
| - | - |
| First | Selected custom environments, in their displayed order. |
| Next | The organization-level environment, where available. |
| Last | The Derivitec environment. |

A selected custom environment does not imply that every required observation comes exclusively from that source.
Available data, dates, and configuration still matter.
Use [View market data](../report-types/market-data-reports) to inspect an instrument in its selected environment and date context.

## How are observations supplied or updated?

Market observations use supported API operations or integrations configured for the organization.
The required format, identifiers, units, dates, and update behavior depend on the operation.
Suitable write access to the destination environment is required.

The environment manager does not provide a general Excel market-data import control.
[Position Import](./upload-positions) loads position workbooks, not market observations.
Confirm the supported delivery process with the administrator or configured support contact before submitting data.

## Can client data be downloaded automatically?

Automated downloads can retrieve market data from sources configured for the organization.
Availability and timing depend on the agreed integration.
Confirm the supported source and delivery process with the administrator.

These downloads supply the platform's data process.
They are separate from [Excel report exports](../login-and-start/dump-to-excel) downloaded through Notification Center.
The environment manager has no whole-environment download control.

## What can the environment manager change?

An owned custom environment can display a pencil control for **Edit Market Data Environment**.
The dialog contains **Name**, **Description**, and **Status** controls.
These change environment details or availability, rather than individual market observations.

<Warning>
Deactivation removes an environment from new report selections.
It can also hide saved Risk launcher rows that reference the environment.
Check dependent report configurations before changing availability.
</Warning>

After any **Update**, verify the intended values in the reloaded list and check error alerts.
If an unchanged name produces a duplicate-name error, refer it to the configured support contact.
Avoid repeated submissions without checking the resulting state.

The manager provides no environment-delete control.
Creating or renaming an environment does not itself run a report.
