# Rename row and column headers

> How to rename or restore the original name of row and column header cells in Pivot table, Tree table, and Table widgets in Atoti UI without changing the underlying member, measure, or cube data, and how to configure the edited-cells highlight that marks renamed cells.

In a [table widget](../about-widgets#tables-for-aggregated-data), the names displayed by the row and column headers can be edited in place.
For example, the header cell for `contributors.COUNT` can be renamed to **Number of trades**. This name is more meaningful to business users.

A new name only changes what the widget displays.
The [level member](../../../navigate-atoti-ui/data-model#level) or [measure](../../../navigate-atoti-ui/data-model#measure) behind the cell is left untouched, and so is the data in the [cube](../../../navigate-atoti-ui/data-model#cube).

<Note>
  Renaming is available only in the **Pivot table**, **Tree table** and
  **Table** widgets.
</Note>

## How to rename a header cell

1. Click the header cell displaying the name to change.
2. Type the new name. To edit the current name instead of replacing it, press <kbd>F2</kbd>.
3. Press <kbd>Enter</kbd> or <kbd>Tab</kbd> to apply the new name, or <kbd>Escape</kbd> to discard it. Leaving the cell in any other way, for instance by clicking another cell, applies the new name too.

See [keyboard shortcuts](../../../navigate-atoti-ui/keyboard-shortcuts#rename-row-and-column-headers) for all the keys available while renaming.

Only the cells displaying the name of a member or a measure can be renamed.
Value cells, the level names in the top left corner of the table, and totals and subtotals cannot.

## How to restore the original name

Applying an empty name brings back the name coming from the cube: press <kbd>Backspace</kbd> on the renamed cell to clear its name, then <kbd>Enter</kbd>.

## How are renamed headers highlighted?

Every renamed cell is highlighted with a vertical bar along its left edge, setting it apart from the names coming from the cube.
Restoring the original name removes the bar.

## How to configure the edited-cells highlight

In the [**Settings**](../../../navigate-atoti-ui/settings) popup, **Highlight edited cells** turns the bar on or off for all widgets; when enabled, **Edited cells highlight color** sets the color it uses.

To override the preference for a single widget, toggle **Highlight edited cells** in its **Behavior** tab.

## What does a new name affect?

A new name belongs to the widget it was entered in:

* Other widgets keep displaying the original name, including when they display the same member.
* Charts and KPI widgets always display the original names, so switching the widget to one of those types displays them again.
* Sorting, filtering, [drilling down](../../../analyze-data/drill-down) and [expanding](../../../analyze-data/expand-collapse-hierarchies) keep working even with cells renamed.
* [Copying cells](../../../navigate-atoti-ui/keyboard-shortcuts#tables) and [exporting to CSV](../../../exports/export-to-csv-or-pdf#export-to-csv) use the displayed names.
* New names are preserved when the [dashboard](../../dashboards) or the [widget](../save-a-widget) is saved.

<Note>
  To rename a calculated measure for every widget and every dashboard, edit it
  from the data model instead, see [rename a calculated
  measure](../../../modify-the-cube-from-the-ui/calculated-measures#rename-a-calculated-measure).
</Note>
